After I graduated from the Yale School of Music, I headed to New York to pursue a career singing opera and classical music. But then something funny happened. While I was working at the Manhattan School of Music, the dean there, a splendid guy named Richard Adams, noticed that I liked to write and lined me up to be the music critic at The Washington Market Review, a community paper in lower Manhattan. In about a year, I was not only he music critic but the arts editor, managing the work of a drama critic, a dance critic, a book critic, and others.
I guess somebody noticed the articles I was writing there, because I was then offered a job as a researcher and newsletter writer at a company called EIC/Intelligence. In about a year, I was the managing editor there too, and was supervising a staff of other newsletter editors. Then I was hired to join the editorial staff of Bottom Line/Personal, which at the time was the most successful newsletter in America, with more than one million subscribers. Then the National Institute of Business Management came looking for me and hired me to be editor of a newsletter called Executive Strategies. I wrote some books there too. And guess what? In about a year, I was the editor in charge of supervising a staff of newsletter editors there too.
